What to Expect When You Visit Us

"Ask, and it will be given you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you."  Matthew 7:7

Who We Are

We are a community of free-thinking people who follow the example of Jesus Christ. St. John's is part of the Episcopal Church & the world-wide Anglican Communion. All people--cis-gendered, LGBTQIA, differently-abled, Black, ᏣᎳᎩ, white, young & old, conservative, liberal, & apolitical, believing & doubting--are welcome here. We strive to fully welcome ALL, just as Christ has welcomed us into this family of faith.

Children

Children are invited to worship with adults in what we affectionately call “Big Church." If they would like a worship time designed just for them, they are welcome to come downstairs for Children's Church, where they receive compassionate care & thoughtful instruction. Children's ministers bring kids back up to receive communion or a blessing.

What to Wear

Whatever you want--many dress in their "Sunday Best," but jeans and t-shirts are also fine. What is most important to us is that you come as you are and feel at home.

Worship

Our services last between an hour and an hour and a half. We share Communion (also called Holy Eucharist) each week, sing together, hear a sermon ("homily"), read scripture, pray, confess our sins, and proclaim our faith. We share food and coffee after services downstairs.

Our ancient style of worship dates back to the early church and centers on Communion. Most of our service can be found in your bulletin and comes from the red Book of Common Prayer (BCP). Hymns are found in the blue Hymnal 1982. Hymnals and BCPs are found in every pew. Hymn numbers are on the Hymn Board on the wall to the left of the altar. Readings and hymn numbers can also be found in your bulletin inserts.

If you're new to this kind of worship and would like some help, an usher can seat you next to someone who can help you navigate, or you can ask a neighbor. Many of us have needed help in the past--don't be shy!
